RAIN at the Stockholm World Water Week 2008

RAIN and Acacia Water have organized a successful side-event during the Stockholm World Water Week 2008. During the interactive session, more than 175 people were triggered to discuss the opportunities and challenges of rainwater harvesting and ground water recharge, in view of the negative impacts of climate change and the great need for a safe water supply. A variety of actors were present in the high level panel, such as Peter de Vries from DGIS-DMW (Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Richard Carter from Cranfield University, Yohannes Ghebremedhin from the Ministry of Water in Ethiopia, Anne Keller from Swiss Re and Abdul Nashiru Mohammed from Water Aid Regional desk West-Africa. Successful sand dam pilot project in Ethiopia

RAIN and Acacia Water have won the 2007 Swiss Re International ReSource Award for Sustainable Watershed Management. Of the 154 projects submitted from around the world, the project titled ‘Water Harvesting to improve Livelihoods in Southern Ethiopia’ distinguishes itself through combining the implementation of a straightforward and proven technology with an approach involving all local stakeholder groups. Through an innovative combination of sand dams and below ground rainwater harvesting tanks, the project will provide safe drinking water and water for agriculture and livestock for at least 2000 people in the remote and critically-dry Borana Zone of southern Ethiopia. RAIN introduced sand dams into its programme

A sand dam is a partially subsurface dam build in a dry and sandy riverbed onto bedrock or an impermeable layer. It is constructed across a river to block the subsurface flow of water, hence creating a reservoir upstream of the dam within the riverbed material. Read more...
